Code of Conduct

Code of Conduct

Roleplay is a collaborative hobby, and that means that cooperation and treating each other equitably. To ensure this, there is a code of conduct in place for everyone participating in the game. Some general universal guidelines apply to everyone in the game, and there are other specific guidelines intended for the mod or players specifically.
By applying to this game you are agreeing to abide by these codes of conduct. More information on the handling of infractions can be found in the mod's code of conduct below.

Just one special note: I am modding this game as a hobby, for fun, because I enjoy GMing and otherwise modding games. I welcome feedback, including critique, but if there's a consistent issue with playerbase attitudes of disrespect, entitlement, or otherwise toxic atmosphere, I will issue gamewide warnings. I will issue two gamewide warnings, and on the third the game will be shut down. This is to ensure that I'm not stuck running a game that has become a chore, which would significantly impact my quality of life considering the amount of time modding takes up. If I get tired of running the game for another reason or if I no longer have time to run the game, I will consider bringing on secondary mods or passing the game on to a player.

TREAT EACH OTHER WITH RESPECT: This is the most important rule. Treat everyone involved in the game with respect. This includes clearly communicating with both fellow players and the mod, and taking responsibility for your actions. If there is any kind of situation where communication is not successful or an issue cannot be resolved, please bring it to the mod as soon as possible, preferably by private message to the mod account, and I'll do my best to mediate. If you have feedback about something that I am doing as a mod, please let me know clearly and respectfully, and we can talk about it. We are all adults and, more importantly, we're all human beings - don't be a toxic presence in the game or you will be removed.

PROHIBITED CONTENT & CONTENT WARNINGS: Currently, the only types of contact that are entirely prohibited in Annexed is the threading out of sex involving characters who are either physically or mentally under the age of 18, and pregnancy plots. While players are free to write whatever content they want in their own spaces, this content should not be threaded out in any of the game communities, IC inboxes, or other places that are linked to directly on the game pages.
For other content that is generally considered taboo or may be triggering (including but not limited to underage sex, childhood abuse, incest, sexual assault, drug or alcohol abuse, extreme violence/gore, suicidal ideation, or other similar issues) is perfectly fine for characters to discuss, but every mention or discussion of these topics should include clear content warnings so other players can avoid reading them if they wish. Please use your common sense, but if you're wondering whether a topic might need a content warning, please err on the safe side. Unnecessary warnings don't hurt anyone, but missing warnings can cause a lot of emotional damage to another person.

THERE ARE NO STUPID QUESTIONS: Annexed is built to be very flexible, and the mod would love to engage in a back and forth flow of information and input with the player base. This means that the I will generally ask players, either individually or as a community, what outcomes or answers would be most interesting and enjoyable and do my best to realistically make it happen. Players are also encouraged to ask questions about any kind of setting or plot points, character projects, or other ideas in order to collaborate with the mod to try to make it happen, if realistically possible. More information on possibly unconventional parameters for player questions can be found in the player code of conduct below.

DON'T SAY NO FOR NO REASON: I am running this game because I really genuinely enjoy running games. I like the unpredictability and challenge of adapting to the curveballs players throw at me. I have no interest in power trips, so I have no intention of saying no just for the sake of saying no. If I can't figure out a way to make something happen for a player, then I will explain the reasons I can't and work out an alternative with the player based on what the main appeal of the first idea was. I cannot stress enough that this game is not on rails and that the challenge of adapting things to make sure everyone is having fun is something I really enjoy doing. Please give me lots of things to work with!

IMPARTIALITY: Every person in the game is subject to the Code of Conduct, and the rules for activity guidelines and other game mechanics apply to everyone equally. While occasionally plot decisions may be made based on player activity or other circumstances (for example, time-sensitive plots involving more active players in pivotal roles), generally these decisions (where necessary) will be made based on either first-come-first-serve or RNG, and the method to be used will be clearly stated on plot-related posts. Infractions against the Code of Conduct and other rules will be applied equally to all members of the game. While I do find all of you delightful, I'm not playing a character in the game and I'm not involved in OOC social media, so I have no real stakes in how things are handled beyond keeping the game from being toxic and inactive. My intention is to mostly interact with the playerbase in terms of modding.

HANDLING OF INFRACTIONS: Infractions against the Code of Conduct will generally be handled on a case-by-case basis, as no two social situations are exactly alike. All action will be taken only if evidence can be provided (ie. pastebins, screencaps, demonstrated pattern of behavior, etc.) and will also be taken on a case-by-case basis. I have a zero-tolerance policy for bullying and harassment - please note that hate speech, including hate speech used on plurk or other social avenues if screencaps are provided, will be considered grounds for instant removal from the game and a ban.
Complaints will not be accepted from anonymous or sock puppet accounts, nor will I consider any kind of complaint sourced completely from anonymous communities, but in cases where I find it likely that the handling of a complaint will result in further bullying or harassment of the complainant and the evidence provided is sufficient, the identity of the complainant will not be revealed.

PREBANNING: The mod reserves the right to disallow entry to the game to players who have a documented history of toxicity in previous games. This will be decided similarly to Code of Conduct infractions, with proof required and both sides of the story taken into account where possible. Again, no complaints from anonymous or sock puppet accounts will be accepted, and I don't keep up with anonymous communities, so complaints there will likely not be seen and will be completely disregarded either way.

⇅ Player Code of Conduct ⇅

SPORTSMANSHIP: Annexed is a plot-intensive and mission-based game and it is only going to run smoothly if players are treating each other with respect when it comes to the handling of missions, player plots, and plot events. Players should not hoard plots by taking on more than they can handle or frustrating the efforts of other players to complete their own plots; they also should not hijack other players' plots by becoming involved and then taking the plot to another group of characters, cutting out the original player; neither should they attempt to have one character 'solve' the plot on behalf of a group that are plotting together or a mod-posted plot event. Players should also keep in mind that their activity levels affect other players involved in mod-posted plot events or plots planned by a group, and either be sure to tag promptly on these kinds of threads or drop out of the plot to avoid holding everything up.
Godmodding and infomodding also fall under this category - please remember that your knowledge and OOC opinions and those of your character are two different things, and always communicate with your thread partner(s) when working on threads together.

ASK EVEN IF YOU EXPECT A NO: This was touched on in the 'no stupid questions' and 'don't say no for no reason' sections, but I can't stress it enough - I really, really enjoy having curveballs thrown to me, and I really enjoy leaving things in the hands of the players. Some of my most exciting experiences modding and GMing, experiences that made running games the most interesting and engaging to me, have been when players did things I didn't at all expect or see coming. If you have an idea for a big plot your character might run, a new group they'd set up, or even an idea for a plot that wouldn't involve your character at all, please bring it to me so I have a chance to run with it. The plot for this game is not on rails and I would absolutely love to see players completely mess up the setting. Which brings us to...

BE ADAPTABLE: In order to leave space and time for players to do what they like with the setting, this means that players will also need to be adaptable. Plots may sometimes end sooner or drag later than anticipated, the setting may change in ways that no one could anticipate, including how NPCs see the PCs. Please be aware that the game will not be static and will adapt and adjust according to player actions and plot adaptations to suit them.
